Iceland is known for its expansive landscapes, remote natural wonders, and spectacularly scenic drives. If you’re coming to Iceland in a larger group, hiring a minivan makes most sense to see the country to the fullest.

It saves you the hassle of relying on public transport. Plus, it’s much more convenient than organising a tour, as it gives you the flexibility to travel entirely at your own pace. Overall, hiring a minivan offers freedom to larger groups that other travel options won’t provide.

What licence do you need to hire a minivan in Iceland?

If you’re driving a minivan with up to 8 passengers, you do not need to have a special driving licence in Iceland. A standard licence will be enough to hire a minivan with Höldur.

However, we do ask that you are at least 20 years of age and have had your driving licence for at least a year before you hire a vehicle with us. This applies to all vehicles and is standard practice among rental operators across Iceland.

Only for luxury vehicles and larger vehicles, including larger people carriers or motorhomes, do you need to be over 23.

Can you drive anywhere in a minivan in Iceland?

You can drive on any paved road in Iceland in any of our minivans. Iceland’s road network is extensive and will take you to the vast majority of sights, attractions, and towns.

However, as you may be aware, the highlands of Iceland are only accessible by so-called F-roads. These are unpaved and remote roads that can often be closed during the winter months.

You can only access these highland F-roads in a four-wheel drive. If you intend to use these roads, please check that your rental vehicle is appropriate before completing your booking.
